Best Before - Rimini Protokoll

Rimini Protokoll offers you a chance to experience interactive theater.

Intimately linked to digital technology and the era of the cultural industries, the Rimini Protokoll collective's Best Before theatrical creation is an out of this world mixture of theater, video game, documentary and opinion poll, of social phenomena and theatrical experimentation. La Gaîté lyrique shows, from the moment its doors open, that new art forms are at the heart of its project.

Best Before: the play in which you are the hero and which shatters the traditional boundaries between the public and the stage.
In the hands of every spectator: a joystick. At the other end of the stick, on a screen in the background, a diminutive virtual character begins to move according to the will of his master. Each one's double evolves, transforms itself, meets the avatars of the other spectators. Will they come together? Will they fight?
Since its founding in 2000, Rimini Protokoll excels in the documentary staging of reality. Here, the Germano-Swiss group dramatizes the video game in one of their novel devices, the secret of which only they know. In the company of an electronic artist, a politician, a game tester and a patrol officer, the spectators make a series of personal, social and political decisions for their avatars. Little by little, an entire city is built, a reflection of the people at the controls, and a veritable reflection on collective decisions in the era of new technologies.

Rimini protokoll

Formed in 2000 by Helgard Haug (Germany, 1969), Stefan Kaegi (Switzerland, 1969) and Daniel Wetzel (Germany, 1969), the Rimini Protokoll theatrical group designs projects based on concrete situations. Having quickly become a central figure within a documentary movement which has made a major impact on German theater, the group has also performed abroad for several years now. It has notably won the European Theatre Prize. For each of their creations, the members of Rimini Protokoll surround themselves with amateur comedians, people specializing in an activity, a hobby or with "exceptional life situations" and together with them build the dramatic art of their shows. And if their creations are sometimes seen as hyper-real or as ready-made documentaries, it is because they question the often fragile boundary between reality and fiction.
